Arnica: a plant for athletes, but not only...

Arnica montana its scientific name is a herbaceous plant found mainly in mountainous regions (as its name suggests). Very popular, especially in traditional medicine in chemical form, it is also commonly used by athletes for its Benefits for muscles.

Which part of the plant is used?

To ensure the maximum amount of active ingredients and thus a beneficial effect, the active ingredient is most commonly found in the form of a mother tincture. A mother tincture is a hydro-alcoholic solution resulting from the mixture of the plant, in this case Arnica, and alcohol (ethanol). The mixture is macerated for at least three weeks at between 60 and 95 degrees. A great deal of mixing is involved to extract the maximum amount of active ingredients. Following this maceration, the mixture is filtered and can therefore be used in chemical, homeopathic, or cosmetic formulations.

The entire plant is used, as *Arnica montana* as a whole offers benefits, whether it be the stem, leaves, or flower.

How is Arnica beneficial for the skin and muscles?

Arnica montana contains numerous molecules that give it the benefits we know it has.

Indeed, it includes linoleic acid (omega 6) and oleic acid (omega 9) on one hand.

The role of omega 6 and 9?

Omega-6s allow to Keep skin healthy and help the body to protect itself. These, it should be remembered, are important because they are essential. They are not synthesised by the body; they are obtained from our diet.

However, omega-9s are not widely known for their benefits on the skin, yet they are numerous. Oleic acid is a basic component of our hydrolipidic film, a film that forms our skin's first barrier. Unlike linoleic acid, oleic acid is not an essential fatty acid. Indeed, we synthesise it naturally.

Its presence in Arnica montana allows to feed and protect the skin even the most sensitive as it strengthens the hydrolipidic film to maintain elasticity, flexibility and skin hydration

Some studies have also managed to demonstrate that oleic acid had properties repairing and healing. It would have the particularity of promoting cellular exchange during the healing process.

The Arnica plant contains other molecules that have a significant impact on our skin and muscles. It is also composed of:

  • essential oil of thymol and mono- and sesquiterpenes which help to reduce inflammation and protect the skin
  • sesquiterpene lactones which also help to reduce inflammation (1).

Furthermore, scientific studies have been able to demonstrate the benefits of topical application to the skin for relieving muscle pain and promoting cellular exchange for healing(2, 3).

In conclusion, Arnica montana as an active ingredient has its rightful place in our products, as it allows us to promote muscle warming before or after sporting effort and allows to reduce the appearance of bruising.
